EQUALS, the coalition of charities set up by singer Annie Lennox, has announced the release of a short, two minute film featuring Dame Judi Dench and Daniel Craig. The film was released at midday on March 7th, 2011.
What is the EQUALS Bond Film About?
The film, which is two minutes in length, seeks to question 21st century attitudes towards women and is expected to provoke discussion and debate.
Dame Judi Dench, reprising her role as 'M', interrogates Bond, played by Daniel Craig asking him "as someone with such a fondness for women, I wonder if you've ever considered what it means to be one". The film features Craig in a blonde wig and high heels shot on a darkened stage with a single spotlight. The scene stirs the emotions and has been described as "deeply disturbing".
The voiceover, provided by Dench, details some shocking statistics about gender equality in the modern world that indicate that perhaps equality between men and women isn't as balanced as we generally think.
EQUALS Film Directed by Sam Taylor-Wood and Produced by Barbara Broccoli
As well as featuring Craig and Dench, the film has been supported by other famous names involved in its production.
Sam Taylor-Wood, acclaimed director of Nowhere Boy, directed the short film, saying that the film challenges Bond to rethink the roles of women in the modern world, adding "I hope that the film encourages viewers to do the same." Taylor-Wood is well known for her emotional and thought-provoking work. Significantly, this is also the first Bond film to be directed by a woman.
The film has also been produced by Barbara Broccoli, famous for producing Bond greats including Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace.
That these famous faces in the film industry have come together to give their time to the project is an added boost for EQUALS, who are celebrating the centenary of International Women's Day on March 8th, 2011.
The EQUALS Bond Film Cinema Premiere to be Held at Film Festival
Although the film can be viewed online from 7th March 2011, its cinema premiere will be held at the Birds Eye View Film Festival at London's BFI Southbank on March 8th 2011, to coincide with International Women's Day.
